Behind the scenes
A key element to the work of the History Centre is the work that
is conducted behind the scenes to provide access to the
collections. Stock taking, re-boxing, re-labelling, re-packing,
re-listing and data-input are just some of the on-going activities
keeping us busy..

The move to the Hull History Centre was an enormous undertaking
for the three repositories. The work that went on in preparation
for the move included the University Archives reboxing more than
2000 boxes of material, the Local Studies library stocktaking over
47,000 items and the City Archives moving over 1500 boxes and 1000
volumes. The finding aids across all three repositories have also
been revamped, with updates to the information stored in CALM and
the establishment of a new online combined catalogue.
The work is not over though, and work is progressing to
increase the number of our catalogues available on-line and to re-print all
of our hard copy lists available in the searchroom to ensure
consistency across the three services. A massive undertaking, but
one that will aid access to our collections both on site and
remotely.
New deposits are always arriving and the reboxing and
cataloguing of our new and expanding collections is ongoing. The
hard work of our volunteers is a vital contribution which helps us
keep on top of this task.
