Our Collections in the Media
Supplying digital images of our documents to media outlets for
use by local and national media and for TV productions is
another aspect of the work we do behind the scenes. Recently we have
supplied material for the following:
Fishing Crew Lists
Our fishing crew lists were featured in the August 2011 issue
of Who Do You Think You
Are? magazine, in an article by Access and Collections
Manager Carol Tanner. The crew lists give detailed information
about crew members, and they are indexed down to the fourth
hand. A source guide is available and the crew lists
are also searchable on our
online catalogue.
The Blitz
Spring 2011 saw the 70th
anniversary of the blitz on Hull and BBC Look North featured
several photographs from our collection in a piece featuring
reminiscences from members of the public set against
images of bomb damage sites. The image gallery can be
still be found on the BBC
website. The History Centre also took part in several
events commemorating the anniversary in Hull.
Philip Larkin
The Larkin 25 celebrations to mark the
25th anniversary of Philip Larkin's death have attracted a lot of
coverage in the national press. Many of the articles featured
photographs from the Philip Larkin archives. We have been very busy
keeping up with the requests we receive for images from the
collection, especially with the recent publication of 'Philip
Larkin: Letters to Monica', edited by Anthony Thwaite.
Below is a selection of the recent news stories which used
images of the photographs and letters we hold:
'Philip Larkin: Letters to Monica ed. by Anthony Thwaite: review'
in The Telegraph, 17 October 2010
'Philip Larkin's Women', Guardian, 23 October 2010 (original
print article featured Hull History Centre material)
Photographs taken by Philip Larkin were also used
in the
'Larkin the Photographer' exhibition at the Hull Maritime
Musuem between 23 October and 12 December 2010.
See our Philip
Larkin pages for a brief biography, details of collections
we hold and a selected bibliography.

Association for the Protection of Sea-Birds [ref U
DSB]
Several items from this collection featured in the BBC4 documentary
series 'Birds Brittannia', which was
screened on 17 November 2010.
The Association was formed by the Rev. HF Barnes in
Bridlington in 1868 and quickly secured the support of local
landowners and several local Members of Parliament. One of these,
Christopher Sykes MP, introduced a Bill into Parliament which was
passed as the Sea Birds Preservation Act in 1869. The Association
was quickly wound up after this early success, but the letters and
documents were passed down through the family. Descriptions of the
material within this collection is available on our online
catalogue.
Winifred Holtby
The 75th anniversity of this East
Riding author's death was recently marked, and the local press
featured several items from the Local Studies Collection, as
reported on BBC Humberside. Her most well-known novel, 'South
Riding', was broadcast as a BBC drama in early 2011, so expect
to see more of the Local Studies Collection this year!
See our Winifred
Holtby page for a brief biography.
