Case Study - Louise

How I got involved

My youngest daughter started school last September, and after being a full-time mother, I was wondering what to do with my spare time. Whilst on an outing at the Hands on History Museum, I heard about the History Centre, looked on the website and noticed that there was a vacancy for a volunteer with the education officer. I have a great interest in history and also enjoy working with children, so it fitted my lifestyle perfectly. The position has been a flexible one, allowing me to work around my children, and I have enjoyed every moment. The only reason I am leaving is to have my third baby!

What have I done?

Helping the education officer has been a really creative and fun position - perfect for me! I have been able to use my imagination completely, from designing and organising a museum afternoon activity for children, to helping create a History Centre trail leaflet to make children and their families more aware of the facilities that the centre has to offer. I have also been involved with assisting the education officer with resources for her school led sessions which have been really interesting. Above all, I feel it has really given me confidence in myself, allowed me to learn new skills and I have made some great new friends. I will be sorry to leave!Hull History Centre volunteer Louise hard at work on her last day at work before leaving to have her baby
