Case Study - NADFAS

NADFAS, Mark Sykes project
This project at Hull University Archives began in February 2003. It's aim is to catalogue the letters which Sir Mark Sykes received between 1907-1919. They are creating detailed descriptions of each item to enable researchers to discover items and make connections in a way which was not possible before.

NADFAS volunteers outside Sledmere Church

To date more than 11,000 items have been catalogued by the NADFAS volunteers with an additional 900 letters from Mark Sykes being catalogued by archives staff, bringing the total to over 12,000.  There are currently 10 volunteers working with us

Process
Volunteers now record the information about each letter or item directly into Excel, and this data is then migrated by archives staff into CALM our archives cataloguing software.

Another NADFAS project involving the cleaning of archival material is also underway at the History Centre.

For further information about Heritage Volunteering is available on the NADFAS website.
