Groups and Societies
We welcome groups and societies who want to
help us care for the wonderful historic collections held in the
History Centre. The numbers of volunteers that we can accommodate
in one workspace at any one time may be limited.
Due to the move to the History Centre
availability of volunteering opportunities will be very limited
during the last quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of
2010.
Commitment
Volunteers will usually need to
commit to volunteering in blocks of a few hours. This can be a
block of a few hours a week, or a month.
If you are volunteering as part of a group
then we would ask that you ensure you can make time to come in
together to receive your inductions and training in the areas of
work in which we mutually agree you will be volunteering.
Training and Opportunities
The range of
work on offer can be tailored to your group’s needs as time, space
and the History Centre’s needs allow. Examples of the kind of tasks
on which groups and societies have worked in the past include:
- Creating lists and indexes for collections to
increase their accessibility for researchers.
- Basic cleaning of collections
- Repackaging and re-boxing of collections
- Using Latin skills to transcribe collections
in order to increase their accessibility.
Additional future opportunities may
include:
- Contributing to outreach and exhibitions
- Assisting with the education programmes
All volunteers will receive:
- Inductions into their area(s) of work
- A general History Centre induction
- Training in specific additional skills where necessary.
