Family Activities

There are lots of activities aimed at children and their families at Hull History Centre. For more information about any of the activities listed, please ask any member of staff or see our Family events listing.

For families to do together:

History Centre Trail
This is a fun trail to introduce children to the History Centre and show what resources we have to offer. The trail includes:
· Finding out about Hull’s past – from medieval times to modern day.
· Learning about census records and using the microfilm.
· Exploring historic maps of Hull and surrounding areas.
· Watching original film archive of Hull’s bygone days.
· Using the searchroom to ask for a Hull City match programme.
The leaflet also has a puzzle to solve, with a prize at the end for those who complete the trail and the puzzle! The prizes are at the Welcome Desk.

Heritage Story Times
These storytimes are aimed at Under 5s. They feature a story about local people or events (for example Amy Johnson the pilot has been one theme) followed by popular stories on a similar theme (flying, in the case of Amy). The sessions also include a craft activity and the children receive a certificate of attendance.

Things children can do on their own:

Children’s Books  Library books for all ages which range from toddler friendly to more informative books for the older child. There are a wide range of subjects available, which include noisy knights, medieval Britain, post-war Britain, A history of toys, the Romans and a collection of “Horrible Histories”!

Jigsaws  We have two 35-piece photograph puzzles, which show the site of Hull History Centre in the 20^th and 21^st century. These are behind the enquiry desk. They need to be signed out and in. The puzzles are quite big and will need to be done on one of the library desks at the back, in the arcade on the floor, or on the Welcome Desk.

Saturday Picnics  Free, fun, craft activities for children who are aged five and over. All activities are inspired by Hull and its history. A packed lunch and lots of enthusiasm is all that is required!
