The History Centre Project

These pages provide background information relating to the development of the History Centre project from its initial concept, the identification of a site location and the design and the topping out ceremony. The Hull History Centre opened for business on 25th January 2010 and was officially opened by Dan Snow on 7th June 2010.

The Hull History Logo
The logo for the History Centre is, appropriately enough, a stylised tree.Hull History Centre logo

The tree is composed of fractals, segments of curves which seem to go on to infinity, like history. It is emblematic of longevity, and archives must last for ever. It also symbolizes the family trees which many of our customers use the History Centre to research. It also references the timber from the Baltic which Hull's trade was built on from its earliest days, and its style is reminiscent of medieval art - appropriate for a building which houses medieval documents, among many others.

Altogether it's a very appropriate logo for the Hull History Centre.
