BBC ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects’

Hull History Centre, Monday 15th February, 10am-4pm

Over 600 people came to the Hull History Centre to find out more about the objects shortlisted from our region featured in this major BBC campaign and take part in events throughout the day. The day included activities for both adults and families.

Throughout the day members of the public were invited to bring objects in to be photographed and uploaded onto the BBC website. Contributors included Rebecca, aged 4 whose George V silver jubilee cup was one of the first online. Throughout the day there was also a Family History help desk in the library which helped visitors overcome hurdles in their researching.

Other events throughout the day included;

'A Potted History': The stories behind the objects.
An expert panel from across the Humber region showcased the 10 objects that made it onto the list of 100 objects that chart A History of the World. These included Amy Johnson’s flying suit from Sewerby Hall and a package of Reckitts Blue from Streetlife Museum.

Hull History Centre Lunchtime Club:
The lunchtime club included some beautiful acoustic music as Geoff Lawes gave his presentation about ‘Hull Men in the Spanish Civil War’ partnered by his guitar, to a packed house.

Family Activity ‘Memory Maps’
Families created their own ‘Memory Maps’ of their local area and the buildings important in their life. They also contributed their memories of Hull and pinned them on to our historical map of Hull.

Family History Introduction

This taster session, run by Adult learning gave people the chance to try out our resources for researching family history and get some advice and guidance on how to start their family tree. It was well attended and led to regular 3 week Family History Basics courses. Call Arike on 01482-317508 for more details.

Local History Course

We held the first session of our 5 week local history course run by Adult Learning in which participants used maps, trade directories and census returns to chart the development of the Chariot Street Triangle in Hull. This also proved popular and led to regular local history courses and taster sessions. Call Arike on 01482-317508 for more details.
