Creating Good Soldiers: Character
Education in the Military
Mr Carrick argues that attempts by military
educators to mould ‘good character’ in members of the military are
inappropriate, particularly in the context of ‘wars among the
people’ such as the current conflict in Afghanistan. Drawing on the
findings of the three-year Military Ethics Education Network
research project undertaken by Professor James Connelly and
himself, he argues that such attempts are theoretically
misguided and, in practice, dangerously counter-productive.
