International Workshop - Ethics Training and Development in the
Military (Part 2)
Thursday 24 and Friday 25 May
Following the great success of Workshop One in this series, held at the
University of Hull on 22 and 23 June 2006, we are pleased to
confirm that Workshop Two took place at the University of Hull on
Thursday 24 and Friday 25 May 2007.
The AHRC supported the two workshops with a £10863 grant.
Most of the speakers who took part in the first workshop delivered
papers at Workshop Two. The workshop considered requirements
for ethical training of the armed forces for taking part in
'operations other than war'.
Modern armed forces are frequently deployed in situations other
than traditional combat. They may be required to perform
peacekeeping duties, or be engaged in humanitarian
intervention. This workshop examined the ways in which armed
forces throughout the world are training their personnel in the
ethical complexities of meeting these new roles.
Speakers included: Prof Martin Cook, Dr Stephen
Deakin, Col Yvon Desjardins, Dr Henri Hude, Mr Nigel de-Lee, Col
Herbert McMaster, Dr Patrick Mileham, Dr Peter Olsthoorn, Dr Paul
Robinson, Dr David Whetham, Dr Andy White, Lt Colonel Jeffrey
Wilson, Mr Don Carrick. Commentators will include Major General
Patrick Cordingley.
Two collections of papers from the two workshops are currently
being edited and should be published in 2007/8.
